Columbia Spectator: Saturday Night Live writer and comedian Nimesh Patel was pulled from the stage by event organizers after telling jokes that were criticized as racist and homophobic during his performance at cultureSHOCK: Reclaim, an event held by Columbia Asian American Alliance on Friday night….
During the event, Patel’s performance featured commentary on his experience living in a diverse area of New York City – including a joke about a gay, black man in his neighborhood – which AAA officials deemed inappropriate. Patel joked that being gay cannot be a choice because “no one looks in the mirror and thinks, ‘this black thing is too easy, let me just add another thing to it.’”
And right there is a perfect example of why comedians like Chris Rock and even the incredibly tame Jerry Seinfeld no longer play at college campuses. Here we have a perfectly good joke, or part of one, about why it’s nuts to think that people would make a conscious decision to be gay when even in 2018, gay people face a lot of discrimination.
One student in attendance named Adam said, “[U]sing people’s ethnicity as the crux of his jokes could be funny but still offensive.”
He (whoops, I don’t know what Adam identifies as other than “humorless” so I’ll just refer to him by his first name so I don’t offend anyone) Adam called the joke “inappropriate.”
As ridiculous as that take is, what’s especially fucked is that the people who were offended by the jokes decided the best way to stop being offended wasn’t to walk out, but rather to interrupt the act and stop it altogether. This is how it works on college campuses now. Students who declare themselves offended by a speaker get to decide, for everyone, that the speaker is not worth hearing. For them it’s not enough to simply walk away or not attend in the first place. Rather, these self-appointed censors are allowed to shut the whole thing down if it doesn’t live up to their standards of wokery.
To me, this incident highlights the difference between a liberal and a leftist (or “regressive leftist,” if you prefer). When faced with a speaker who offends them, a liberal thinks, “I don’t have to hear this,” and leaves. A leftist thinks, “People can’t hear this,” and yells until the speaker leaves.
